The Squat Pen Rests – Short Story Writing Competition

‘The Squat Pen Rests’

Short Story Writing Competition

Live event 7:30 till late. Friday 26th January 2018

We are looking for six (or more) fabulous writer/performers to come along to our very first live reading event at ‘The Place’ in the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon.

How to enter:

Write between 1500-2000 words on the subject of your choice (or you can use the prompt ‘new beginnings…) then send us your stories for the chance to be selected to read your story on stage and maybe, just maybe, be crowned the very first ever Squat Pen Rests Writing Competition Champion of the World.

The shortlisted entrants will be invited to come along to perform their piece in front of a lovely audience of short story fans. The outright winner, as voted for by our previously mentioned lovely audience, will be presented with a £50.00 cash prize.

Plus, every finalist will be awarded a limited edition, Squat Pen Rests Writing Competition Finalist mug, as well as having their stories posted on the competition website. And not only do entrants get a fancy mug-and-plug for their stories, they will also be cheered and applauded by the audience, and most likely have songs written about them in praise of their efforts. (Maybe not the last bit but there will most definitely be cheers and applause.)

It costs just £3.00 per story to enter and you can enter up to three stories per event.

Finally, and just in case you’d been pondering, we absolutely do not mind if your stories have been published or performed before – so, ponder no more. Send us what you got.

The serious stuff:

All stories will be read by the competition judge (or ‘me’ as I am otherwise known) who will then select six (or more) stories to go forward into the final.

Before entering, please ensure you are available to come along and read on Friday 26th January 2018

Each of the entrants will receive free entry (of course), plus one complimentary ticket.

Closing date: 19th January 2018. Successful entrants will be notified no later than 22nd January.

I have a story, or three, to submit and wish to be part of this event. What do I do now?

I’m glad you asked. You can submit a story for £3 via PayPal. Why £3? There can only be six(ish) contenders for the event. I will be personally reading through each and every story you submit. This takes time and I value my time at exactly £3 per story. No scan reading, no short-cuts. I will give your story the time it deserves and make my decision based on this. I hope that sounds fair enough. Why PayPal? It’s the safest way to send money over the internet. If you’re ready to continue, then click the link below:

I’m ready to send you my story. Take my money and read my story!

I want to attend as a member of the audience

A good choice. Tickets are now available through the Wyvern Theatre Swindon’s website, priced at a staggeringly reasonable £5.50.  So, do not hesitate and whatever you do, don’t delay. Here’s that all important link:

Tickets will also be announced through the usual social media channels and the Wyvern Theatre’s website.

I sincerely look forward to seeing you at the event.
